Founded by George G. Black, the Black Bear Manufacturing Company operated from 1914 to 1981 and was known for its Black Bear brand of overalls. Black’s concern for the health and welfare of his employees, at a time when sweatshop conditions ruled the garment industry, was reflected in the building’s abundant natural light and amenities such as a cafeteria and a roof garden. Garment workers reflected the diverse communities in the neighboring areas, and the company served as a place for individuals across communities to establish relationships as they worked together side by side.
