Created in 1970 and named after one of its original founders, the Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center’s services were originally overseen and developed by the Seattle Black Panther Party, whose “Survival Programs Pending the Revolution” included creating a well-baby clinic and sickle cell anemia testing. At its start, the clinic was known as the Sidney Miller Free Medical Clinic, in honor of a fallen Black Panther Party comrade. It was later renamed in honor of Carolyn Downs, a member of the Seattle Black Panther Party and dedicated community organizer, whose data research on health disparities within the Black community helped fundraise for the clinic. Tragically, Downs died at age 25 of health issues in 1978. The Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center is the only one of the 13 original Black Panther Party-founded health care clinics across the nation still in operation today.
