Douglass-Truth Branch Library (#48)

Originally opened in 1914 as the Henry L. Yesler Memorial Library, this library’s collection grew to feature books in 13 different languages to reflect the neighborhood’s changing demographics. In 1965, the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority—a national sorority of Black college women—donated books to launch what is now called the African American Collection of literature and history. Today, the African American Collection has more than 10,000 items, with an emphasis on Northwest materials and Seattle-area history. In 1975, the branch was renamed the Douglass-Truth Branch in honor of Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth.
