James W. Washington, Jr., came to Seattle with his wife Janie to work in the shipyards as part of the World War II effort. He was also a prolific painter, sculptor, writer, and community activist. The couple bought this house in 1949 and, upon their passing in 2000, bequeathed the home to the community as a place to experience art, gather, and learn. Visit the center during its monthly and annual recurring events.
