Constructed in 1909, the Eastern Hotel was one of the earliest properties of the Wa Chong Company. The building housed Chinese and Japanese retail businesses and Filipino cannery workers and was later renovated in 1998 to include 46 apartments for low-income tenants. Carlos Bulosan, the Filipino American author of America Is in the Heart, lived in the Eastern Hotel in the 1930s. A mural with symbols of Filipino American laborer experiences in Seattle by artist Eliseo Art Silva can be seen through the front windows.
