In 1957, Fred and Dorothy Cordova formed and directed Filipino Youth Activities (FYA)—created to enhance Filipino American culture and impart core Filipino family values. It became an important force for organizing demonstrations in the 1960s and 1970s. Dorothy Laigo Cordova also served as Director for the Demonstration Project for Asian Americans (DPAA) until it closed in the early 1980s. In 1982, the Cordovas created the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS). FANHS now has nearly 30 chapters around the United States. In Seattle, FANHS houses the National Pinoy Archives, which is one of the largest collections on Filipino American history anywhere.
