Once an important grape-growing center with some local wineries. The post office name was Detroit, chosen in 1889 by Detroit Land & Improvement Company which planned a boom town. In 1890, the present name was substituted by Postmaster Walter O. Eckert for grape growing had by that time proven to be successful.
