Built in 1909, the Louisa Hotel provided housing for Asian American laborers and storefronts for Chinatown businesses. African Americans also settled in the area, and from the 1920s to the 1950s, nightclubs flourished along Jackson Street as Black musicians were segregated south of Yesler Street and east of 8th Avenue. The 2019 renovation project features 84 workforce apartments and family businesses—and also 1920s Art Deco murals from the historic jazz club the Club Royale.
