NP Hotel (#18)

Built in 1914, the NP Hotel was a popular choice with visiting dignitaries and baseball teams from Japan. There were six Japanese-operated hotels in Seattle as early as 1900; by 1925, there were 127. Husband-and-wife proprietors worked day and night to clean lobbies and rooms, make the beds, and do the laundry. The building, now managed by InterIm Community Development Association, serves as affordable housing today. View the nearby storefront exhibition on the Murakami Family, Higo Ten Cents Store, and their forced removal from Seattle to the Minidoka concentration camp during World War II.

Renovation of the hotel in 1991 included restoration of its original sign. A dramatic painted brick sign rises five stories on the building’s south side. Photo by Michael B. Maine. Wing Luke Museum Collection.
