Point Ellice

The Washington section of US 101 ends at Megler on Point Ellice, formerly a ferry slip, now with a bridge over to Oregon. It was named for Joseph G. Megler, a pioneer legislator, who operated a fish cannery up the river at Brookfield.

Across the broad, restless waters of the Columbia, the soft outlines of Onion Peak, Saddle Mountain, and Green Mountain headland rise mistily from the Oregon shore.

By the end of 1966, ferry service between Megler and Astoria was no longer needed, as the Oregon Highway Department had completed the Astoria-Megler Bridge that year. The bridge remains notable as the longest three-span through-truss bridge in the world.

US 101 continues south across the bridge into Oregon, eventually terminating in southern California.
