The lake was named for Stephen Liberte, one of the earliest settlers; he came to the Pacific Northwest from Quebec in 1866 and settled on the lake in 1869. The community developed as a summer resort and in 2001 Liberty Lake was incorporated and is now a year-round community where people can golf, boat, fish, and camp.
