Liberty Lake

The lake was named for Stephen Liberte, one of the earliest settlers; he came to the Pacific Northwest from Quebec in 1866 and settled on the lake in 1869. The community developed as a summer resort and in 2001 Liberty Lake was incorporated and is now a year-round community where people can golf, boat, fish, and camp.

Stephen Liberte chose the career of guide and mail carrier, after having been educated for the priesthood. He married an Indian woman and finally settled on the Coeur d’Alene Reservation. Liberty Creek is the starting point for a trail trip to Mica Peak.

West of the junction, Appleway Avenue/Sprague Avenue follows the course of the Spokane River. Former farmlands and orchards have given way to office buildings, housing developments, and strip malls. The communities of Greenacres, Veradale, Opportunity, and Dishman are now part of the city of Spokane Valley.
