Familiar things take on added significance in this sparsely settled expanse—a line of white birch trees, a man on horseback seen against the horizon, a small Catholic church of wood and Stone cemented with red mortar, a gas station, cattle feeding by a haystack, a stand of timber. Gradually the valley begins to open, as the route nears the Columbia River.
