John McMaster of Kenmore, Ontario, established a shingle mill there in 1890. He became known as the dean of the local shingle industry. On January 10, 1901, McMaster named the town for his home. The site had been a meeting place for local Native Americans, who called it Sta-tab-eh, meaning lots of people talking.
