Named for the Wahkiakus family; James Wahkiacus was the last chief to hold undisputed claim to the leadership of the Klickitat people. Chief Wahkiacus fought at the Battle of the Cascades in March of 1856 and died in 1902. A daughter, Sally Wahkiakus, lived until 1930 and was well known in Klickitat County.
